Cover Reveal & Giveaway – A Quest for Mr. Darcy by Cass Grafton

THE BOOK: A Quest for Mr. Darcy

Fitzwilliam Darcy is on a quest. Convinced he is over his foolish infatuation with Elizabeth Bennet, he returns from a year of travelling with a plan, both to protect the estate of which he is guardian and to ensure his sister’s happiness: he intends to do his duty and secure a wife at the earliest opportunity.

Front Cover - final

Duty; a path from which Darcy knows he should never have been diverted. Duty was safe and nothing would persuade him from it a second time.

Soon restored to his home in Derbyshire, Darcy puts his quest in motion, preparing to welcome guests from Town, one of whom is the suitably eligible young lady he has earmarked as his future wife.

But what of the Bennets of Longbourn? What befell them in Darcy’s absence from England? And what of the new tenants on his estate named Bennet? Is his path fated to cross with Elizabeth’s once more?

With the addition of his friend, Bingley’s, mischievous twin younger sisters, letters from a stranger and a shadowy figure lurking in the grounds of Pemberley, Darcy’s life is about to be turned upside down.

Can he remain steady to his purpose, or will his carefully laid plans soon be in tatters as the rigid protection he has placed around his heart begins to falter?

And now…

A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR: Cassandra Grafton

A love of all things Jane Austen has enriched my life in many ways, but one of the most important things I have gained in recent years is the friendship of some amazing people, none of whom I would have met had we not been brought together through our shared admiration for her.

I ‘met’ Rita (the one with the hat on the picture below), owner of this Blog, online some years ago. She has an impressive and informative archive page on Facebook (called All Things Jane Austen) which has over 40,000 followers!

Brought together by a shared love of one of the world’s favourite authors, we have become firm friends, despite being very different from each other! About eighteen months ago, we had the chance to do what so many hope for when they meet through social media: we met in person, and what better place to do it than Hampshire, Jane Austen’s home county?

20151216_111228.jpg

We had a wonderful few days, sometimes educational, sometimes inspirational, often touching and always fun! Our adventures took us to Chawton, Winchester and onwards to Bath, where we spent the night in Jane’s former home at No 4 Sydney Place on the anniversary of Jane’s actual birthday.

Having been able to show Rita some of my (and her) favourite places (and things – just ask her about her addiction to M&S Percy Pigs!), I was delighted when she invited me to come to her home on the Internet to reveal the cover of a new novel I have coming out later this month.

A Quest for Mr Darcy is a story inspired by Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, set largely in Derbyshire. I wanted the cover to reflect the location in which it is set, as well as the mood of story: romance with a hint of mystery.

What could I possibly do? I have no technical skills at all, so knew I would have to enlist someone’s help with the design. My thoughts turned immediately to my good friend, Ada Bright, a talented photographer and artist.

Copyright on images is often an issue, so we decided to use our own photos. Getting one of Derbyshire scenery was easy – I’d been there often enough to already have a selection of images we could use, and in the end, we settled for the one which has been part of the banner for the story as I posted it online over a period of six months between October last year and April of this.

thumbnail_Banner

Ada had an idea for the colour palette; all we needed now was a Regency couple! We scoured pages and pages of stock images, but nothing quite fitted what we wanted. Then, an idea began to form.

At first, I batted it away as nonsensical, but as is often the way, once a notion takes hold, it persists in making itself heard! I whizzed a one line email to Ada making the suggestion, then sat waiting for her reaction, convinced it would be: ‘Don’t be ridiculous!’

Ada’s response? GREAAAAT IDEA!!!

Another email flew out into the void, and I chewed my nails in suspense – only to have our potential cover models agree to the photo shoot!

Now this may sound all very well, but you then have to bring in the logistics. I live in Switzerland, and I had possession of the items of Regency clothing we needed to use. Ada lives in California, along with her cameras. Our cover models live in Surrey in England.

How was this a great idea? Because I happened to know that our models were due to fly out to LA in April for a holiday. What could be simpler? Put the Regency clothing in the post from Switzerland to the USA and lo and behold, once the models arrive, the photo shoot can happen!

And so it did, and we were delighted with the results and I am over the moon with how Ada pulled all the elements together.

I hope you enjoyed reading about how this cover came about. I will be offering several giveaways of the book at various Blogs throughout June in the run up to publication.

  1. Jane Austen gave me her books. This was the most important thing. All the rest came next: a entirely new universe.

Oh, I just love these fanfictions of “Pride and Prejudice” (and this one seems really good!).

  6. I used to think the most important thing Jane Austen had brought to my life was her masterpieces but in the last year, I would have to change that. She has brought to me a world of friends that I am Ever grateful for their fellowship. Our shared interest in Jane Austen brought us together but hearts made us friends.

    1. Christina, I could not agree more! Though I love Jane’s writing and everything surrounding her, such as books about her life and times, the adaptations etc, I value SO much the friendships I have made through the shared love of this wonderful woman! ❤

  7. Cass, I’m so happy to see you come out with this in book form (the series was agony though an ultimate source of ecstasy!). Much as many of your readers, I came to Jane via the 1995 production. It wasn’t until about four years ago that I was introduced to JAFF, but my world is certainly changed now! In addition to the books, I have made many friends from Switzerland (yes, that’s you!) to Alaska. The internet has been instrumental to my growth and dedication to the genre. Can Jane be loved without Wi-Fi? I shudder to think, for my library is on my tablet!

  8. Your books and Jane Austen have taken me to an England that I long to visit; having lived in hot and dusty West Texas and now in humid Central Texas I want to revisit the garden that is England. I was there in 1985 just briefly passing through for a tour of the continent and then in the 90s for a stay in London during our school spring break. (London was dank and cold in March). I am hoping for retirement trip in the near future to tour England and Scotland to see the places mentioned in JAF books.

    1. Hollis, I hope your return to England soon! March is a ‘between-season month sometimes, not sure if it’s in winter still, or fully into spring. I highly recommend May or September!

  9. Can’t wait to read is Cassandra! What has Jane Austen’s impact been on me? My love of Austen has given me some of my favorite stories, both the originals and in the wonderful JAFFs that I’ve read . I’ve made online friends with several authors through reading JAFF and I learn a lot from the various facts you all post while researching your books.
My love of Jane Austen helped start my fascination with England and I have been fortunate enough to visit twice, spending time in Winchester and Chawton. I learned/ am learning to sew clothing in order to make my costumes for the Louisville Jane Austen Festival later this summer. Most of all the world of Jane Austen and her characters gave me a safe imaginary place to go when real life was hard (summer both my parents were and sick and passed away).

The cover looks amazing and I am very much looking forward to reading this! Thanks for sharing your talents with us!

  12. Jane Austen has given me much laughter! I love her ‘one liners’ and her many quirky characters. No matter how many times I’ve read her books I always laugh! If I feel down I reread one of her books and it picks me up. She was so gifted and I admire her for not going down the path expected for women in her time!

  14. Congratulations on publishing this book. I found this story half-written already and I truly enjoyed it.

Jane Austen’s stories taught me to appreciate gender equality and the freedoms we have now. I am also grateful for the medical and scientific advances that we have today compared to the actual practices during the regency era.

Best of all, it reminds me that some things that remain the same – love, heartache, gossip, kindness, jealousy… no matter what century it is.

It behooves us to learn from the past in order to better anticipate the future and appreciate the present.

As for what is the most important thing Jane Austen has brought into my life…FRIENDSHIPS! She has given us the chance to connect with others and bond over her amazing novels. The world of JAFF and all that it entails has opened up a world of like-minded people to come together and share our thoughts and feed our addiction. In a world that has gone mad, she gives us a little bit of peace.

Thank you for this amazing journey and thank you for these lovely gifts. I look forward to holding your hefty tome in my hands and reading the finished product, if I should be so lucky to win!

Now for contest entry, Jane Austen brought romance, excitement, historical interest in the period (I was tired of the American Civil War after devoting so many years to it) and delight in this happy escape and all the charm it brings, It was great to discover Jane Austen’s novels and now the variations. Thank you.

  27. What an amazing tale of how the book cover came to be. To slightly misquote a well-known phrase “The odds were always in your favour”. Ada’s done such a wonderful job with the outside, just as you’ve done with the inside. Can’t wait to see the book in all of it’s weighty glory!

To answer your question, Jane Austen has been part of my life for fifty (yes, really!) years now, since I saw the1940 film version when I was in my first year at grammar school in 1966-67. Then I read the book (was a little upset that the archery scene wasn’t in it!) and eventually all of the rest of the finished novels during my teenage years. Didn’t develop a true appreciation of her works until into my 20s though, and didn’t read the remainder of her writings until I was in my 30s and 40s . What I appreciate most, apart from the wonderful prose that she wrote, is the number of wonderful people I’ve met online and friends I’ve made in the past few years. I’d no idea this community existed until I stumbled upon it quite by accident. Carole in Canada has expressed it perfectly: “As for what is the most important thing Jane Austen has brought into my life…FRIENDSHIPS! She has given us the chance to connect with others and bond over her amazing novels. The world of JAFF and all that it entails has opened up a world of like-minded people to come together and share our thoughts and feed our addiction. In a world that has gone mad, she gives us a little bit of peace”.

    Bless you all!

As stated the value of Jane Austen’s stories goes so far beyond being able to escape into a lovely romance/rom-com. The friendships on these blogs, on Goodreads and even with comments on Amazon have established a whole world I love to visit regularly throughout most days. And I have met several friends and/or authors through those contacts in person. Looking forward to this story when it is published…and to many more books from you, Cass.

And, because of P&P (my favorite), there is now a JAFF community to learn more about Jane Austen, Regency England, and all of the truly wonderful and engaging sequels and variations.
