Ode to Mrs. Bennet

Ball, dances

Blooming romances

Songs, quadrilles,

Laces! All the frills.

Officers in red coats

Knocking at the door.

Hold steady my heart!

Do not drop to the floor.

Five pretty ladies,

I have to marry

A father’s job failed

Let me to tarry.

A handful of husbands is what I need

Unless a rich one we get,

Who spends his income

Easily, with no regrets!

For my youth is not completely gone

I can still enjoy years to come

But I deserve more than regular food

Like a French chef to impress the neighborhood!

For bearing five pretty ladies

Is no easy task.

I say, ask around,

I dare you, will you ask?

As long as none of them will vex me

With their frothy thoughts and state-of-flight,

Be it Mary with her sermons or Lizzy being feisty

Beware mamas, I shall succeed with all my might.

If all else should fail,

I still have Jane

For why would she be so beautiful

If nothing of it became?

  1. Much as I adore Darcy and Elizabeth (and who wouldn’t), I absolutely LOVE this! I sometimes think that the comical or even the not very nice characters are so much more fun to write about!

I think this expresses Mrs B really well throughout, but I think the closing lines are just genius!!

    “If all else should fail,

    I still have Jane

For why would she be so beautiful

    If nothing of it became?”

    ❤ it!!

  2. The impertinent and lovely Mrs. Bennet! Rita you are overcoming yourself with your poetry!
